Leanganook Track (Medium)
The Leanganook track is one of three stages that comprises the Goldfield's Track and offers spectacular scenery over a 58km distance. The trail is signed and contains several challenging climbs and consists of mostly fire trail and small pockets of single track. Beware that bikes should divert over to Harcourt as opposed to climbing the heights of Mt Alexander.
If you want to get the harder climbs out of the way, it is best to catch the train to Castlemaine following the trail back to Bendigo. Be self sufficient taking food and water as well as any necessary spares. Inexperienced riders may take up to 5-6hrs depending on ability and number of stops. Additional information can be found at the Gold Fields Track website including Garmin track and Google Maps info.
O'Keefe - Rail Trail (Easy)
Named after Andrew O'Keefe this 23km trail is relatively flat and links the rural town of Axedale with Bendigo. The surface is a mixture of gravel types, with some sections being progressively upgraded. Overall, the trail surface is suitable for MTB or hybrid bikes only.
A major upgrade of the trail is currently funded and under way, which includes a trail extension from Axedale to Heathcote (expected final completion by Dec 2014). For more information visit bicycle network.
